Teruhiko Kataoka - Love Walking (1977)

Back today with a quick one I really enjoy. In my pursuit of Fumio Karashima albums and appearances, I came across this album from trombonist Teruhiko Kataoka from 1977. Love Walking is a nice little album released on Whynot, featuring Karashima on piano, George Ohtsuka on drums and Kiyoto Fujiwara on bass. Tracks 3 and 5 also featuring an additional trombonist in Osamu Shiomura, who you may remember from our post on Arakawa Band.

Looking a little closer at Kataoka's catalog, this looks to be his only release as leader. He spent much of his playing career with Toshiyuki Miyama and The New Herd. Admittedly I'm not very familiar with their catalog but I have heard some of their albums with Chikara Ueda - which are pretty great. 

This one starts off with a great title track - a tune from fellow New Herdsman, Kozaburo Yamaki. Next is a pretty nice rendition of "You Don't Know What Love Is" followed by a nice Shiomura tune in "Isolation." Final two tunes on this one are the ballad "Emily" followed by another Shiomura tune in "Whirl Wind" - my personal favorite along with the title track. Oddly enough, no originals from Kataoka.

Arakawa Band

Apparently I listened to 1,018 different artists in 2023. Nearly all jazz in one shape or form. Some were artists I was already familiar with but I'd bet the majority were new to me. A favorite of mine I stumbled upon is what I'll cover today. Arakawa Band , lead by flautist and saxophonist  Tatsuhiko Arakawa , absolutely blew me away when I listened to their limited catalog.  Turns out, the group released two albums under the name The Great American Music Band before changing their name. Both albums were released in 1979 and I'm not 100% certain which album was released first. Based on sound alone, my guess is Over The Sky was the first release. It's a little more straight ahead and less funky than the remaining material which leads me to believe it was the group's debut. Kohsuke Mine

Hello there. Today we'll take a look at some albums from saxophonist and  Native Son founding member,  Kohsuke Mine . I'm not sure what originally lead me to his work but these albums eventually lead me to Native Son. We're only covering a snippet of albums that I haven't been able to find on streaming services.  First up, we have 1970's release, Mine . A relatively straightforward album with a nice lineup of Hideo Ichikawa on piano, fellow Native Son founding member Hiroshi Murakami on drums, Takashi Mizuhashi on bass, and also joining is trombonist, Takashi Imai . Significance here is that this is the first release on legendary record label Three Blind Mice . We have 3 originals here from Mine and Ichikawa, along with a rendition of Isotope from fellow saxophonist, the much beloved Joe Henderson .  Released in the same year, the conveniently titled 2nd album   again features Murakami on drums and Imai on trombone. Isao Suzuki Part 2

Today we'll take a look at the next round of albums from Isao Suzuki.  First we have 1975's Orang-utan  and there's a little bit of a discrepancy regarding personnel on discogs vs the liner notes of the album. I'm going to stick to the album notes. Isao is here of course on bass, cello and electric piano, Osamu Kawakami is on double bass, Kenji Mori is on sax, flute and bass clarinet, Kazumi Watanabe on guitar and Shinji Mori is on drums. Track 2 features Mari Nakamoto on vocals. We'll have more from her shortly. Orang-utan opens with a nice blues track, "Blue Road" featuring Isao on electric piano. Next we have a rendition of the Shirley Horn tune, "Where Are You Going" featuring Mari Nakamoto, as mentioned. She has a wonderful voice but as I am not a huge fan of vocals, I've included an instrumental version, as well.
